Good Health Starts on the Inside

January 15, 2015

We all want the best for our pets.  One of the most important things you can do for your pet is to provide the best nutrition available.  Good health starts on the inside.

In this day and age, many of us turn to the internet or other technology to get answers to our nutritional questions we are unsure of.  While for the most part we find some sort of answers, often times we don't realize that the wool has been pulled over our eyes when it comes to correct information about pet food.

Some pet food companies spend millions of dollars on commercial advertising alone.  Unknown to the consumer, these companies are not regulated by the Association of American Feed Control Officials regarding their production or advertisement.  The AAFCO is an association of local, state and federal agencies charged by law to regulate the sale and distribution of animal feeds and animal drug remedies.

There are only a few companies that perform their own feed trials.  Most companies produce the food and sell it without being tested for nutritional content.  Many pet feed companies don't have their own factories and have others producing their formulas.  These production factories often are producing several different brands of food in the same environment which results in cross contamination of ingredients.  This could be problematic when it comes to your pets with specific food sensitivities or allergies.

Another alarming common practice by food companies is the rate in which they are permitted to change feed composition without being required to change their printed ingredient list.  For example, if your dog's food contains chicken and the company decides that turkey is cheaper to use that month, they can switch the meat product for up to 6 months without having to report the change.  If you've ever had a dog or cat with stomach upset after you opened a new bag of their same brand of food, chances are it was due to an unknown ingredient switch.

If you have questions about the quality of your pet food and would like to learn about veterinary approved feed products, ask your veterinarian.  There could be a product for your pet that could better their health and lead to a longer, happier life. Just because you buy the most expensive food doesn't mean it's the best food for your pet.
